Tijuana River Estuary

An assignment for the Tijuana River Estuarine Research Reserve.

Tijuana River Estuarine Research Reserve

The city of Imperial Beach hugs the Tijuana River Estuary on three sides. The estuary is as much part of the community as the beach is.

The Tijuana Estuary is the largest coastal wetland in Southern California.

As a kid in the 80s and 90s, the Tijuana Estuary was my playground. I rode around on my bike with camera in hand, and explored just about every inch of the estuary itself, and Borderfield State Park. These areas are natural wonders, and bring fond memories.

When the Tijuana River Estuarine Research Reserve (TRNERR) approached me about photographing for their new website, I was beyond thrilled.

I was probably one of the most qualified people to take on this project. 30+ years of photographic knowledge with the insider knowledge that only a local possesses.

My intention was to convey just how much the estuary is to the people in the community by showing all the activities people use the estuary for: hiking, biking, running, horseback riding, birding, photographing. And I wanted to showcase the stewards that research and take care of this land.

It was important to show how people used the estuary and demonstrate how integral the estuary is to the community of Imperial Beach.

The Tijuana Estuary is home for many unique bird species including, the Ridgeway Rail, and Western Snowy Plover. Both attract Birders from around the globe.

The Tijuana Estuary is the largest coastal wetland in Southern California. It embraces the communities of Imperial Beach and South San Diego with a natural backyard for all to explore and enjoy.
