A Day at the Park (Skatepark That Is)

When I was a kid, I did all the things. Skateboarding, surfing, and BMX freestyle. Until surfing totally consumed me, I hung out with my buddy Jerry Broderick and road street style BMX. Southern California back in 1990/91 was pretty much the epicenter of freestyle riding BITD. Ron Wilkerson and Mat Hoffman had just released their respective bike companies increasing the durability levels, which led to the birth of other bike companies like Bully, and Dirt Brothers Inc, and S&M. It was a lot of fun, and I think back to those days. Jerry and I got pretty close to […]

In Memorium of David Foltz

It was a precocious little 4 year old girl that introduced me to David Foltz. Sandora (it’s French, pronounced Shandorah), would wander into MPA Architecture, the architecture office I worked for at the time, and sit down next to me and start drawing, coloring and humming an imaginary tune, while I worked on the latest building I was assigned to. The scene was a Live/Work Loft building on 12th & J Street downtown, and because Sandora didn’t have a yard or friends, the people that worked in the building were her friends. The 4 year old was confident, and would visit my […]

WPPI – Annual Vegas Shoot 2013

I just got back from my third year in a row at WPPI, (the Wedding and Portrait Photographers International). Each year a bunch of  photographers get together and congregate in Sin City to attempt to learn things. Mostly what happens is it turns into partying and a little bit of photography happens, and if we can squeeze in a little time, we might take a class or two. This year, despite bringing a full camera bag, and about a pound of film, I ended up not shooting one single frame while I was there. I had some work to do for […]

The Elephant Boy, Joshua Tree and Drop Bears

A good photographer friend of mine from Australia, Xanthe Roxburgh was traveling through Los Angeles on her way to New York, and I got a chance to hang out with her while she was staying with another photographer friend of ours Jess Schilling. We all decided that it would be the greatest thing in the world to drive out to Joshua Tree during Coachella traffic. Good thing Xanthe’s son Arlo was there to entertain us on the drive out with songs about the mythical and highly dangerous Drop Bears of Australia. According to lore, they perch on trees and kill […]

Vegas Baby! WPPI Desert Photoshoot

My first trip to WPPI 2012 was so much fun! Between hangovers, early morning educational classes, and murdering hookers we actually got a chance to go do a little photographing with some of my SWPB friends. We went out to a dry lake bed about 40 minutes South of the Strip and had some model talent meet up with us. Here are some shots with my great friend Jamie from Austin. She’s super beautiful, so we decided to trailer trash it up a bit at the end and do some donuts around her with my X-Terra while she wore a […]

With both my favorite bands every Pearl Jam and Dave Matthews Band celebrating their twenty year anniversaries, it recently dawned on my thick skull that I too am experiencing a twenty year mark of my own, two actually. No… nothing as noble as sobriety, I happily drink like a fish. Nor abstaining from red meat, I do love carne asada burritos. No, none of that. This year, I celebrate 20 years of both Photography and Surfing. I love surfing. I try to paddle out every day. But I’ll focus on the photography here today. It’s fitting that in my 20th […]

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I’m writing this post watching the Monday Night Football game, all bundled up, very sick with the flu after my trip to Texas, (wow, I hope it isn’t the swine flu…) It was a very difficult week with only one day of rest, but very rewarding. Despite coming ill, I feel that during this past week I’ve produced the best work of my life. That being said, I’d like to take the time to say “Thank You” to a number of people that made my trip, and the soon to come photos, possible. First and formost I’d like to thank […]

Experiments in Living – The Absolute Zero Project

Occasionally in life you come across kindreds in such demure methods that really give vindication to theories such as “The Secret”, Law of Attraction, and the pairing of Quantum Physics with Spirituality ala “What the Bleep Do We Know”. Yesterday was a case in point for me. Casually surfing on Craigslist I came upon a random ad asking for a Photographer for a project. I directed my mouse to the website sited and began reading what looked like a manifesto. I continued to read in excitment and discovered that this person was: Giving up his possessions, moving to Austin, and […]

Anniversary Tubing Trip

I should have posted this earlier, but Heather and I celebrated our one year anniversary back in July. We were brainstorming what would be a cool way to celebrate our wedding vows and we decided to invite a few of our friends down to the Comal River and spend the day river tubing. Our neighbor Robert and his boyfriend Andy came, and so did our good friend Beto and his girlfriend Vanessa. It was a great time! There are a couple white water areas, including a big concrete chute that you go down which was really fun, in fact we […]
